Body Autonomy & Consent
Dance is a body-centred art form and requires consent and body autonomy for all people at all times.
Equity In Dance believes in helping dance educators unlearn teaching with an emphasis on touch & helping them practice asking consent. Additionally, we believe in helping dancers claim their body autonomy and be firm with their boundaries and consent giving.

Anti-Racism & Decolonizing Dance
Much of Western and normative dance is colonized as well as ripe with racism. All of this needs to be deconstructed & challenged.
Learning histories, unlearning prejudices, celebrating non-Western dance styles, and combatting cultural appropriation and racism in dance spaces is vital.

Mental Health
Dance can have many positive and negative mental health impacts.
Equity In Dance believes in the positive power that dance can be in someones life while also recognizing the many negative mental health issues it can cause. We strongly believe in dance educators being mental health educated & trauma informed and we advocate for dancer mental health supports.

Creating Art and Challenging Dance Norms
Dance is everything and everywhere.
Equity In Dance is working to help dancers challenge their understandings of dance, unlearn what they believe dance is and means, and allow their definitions of dance to grow and flourish alongside their own personal growth and development.
